The "Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu (ULBS) will implement in the coming period two programs dedicated to students, focused on mental health and drug prevention. The announcement was made during a press conference held by the university's rector, prof. univ. dr. Sorin Radu, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. "We are preparing two programs to raise awareness and sensitize our students regarding mental health, but also the prevention and combating of drug use,” declared rector Sorin Radu. The projects will be coordinated by specialists in the field, under the guidance of psychiatrist Ciprian Băcilă, elected president of the Romanian Association of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, medical director of the Sibiu Psychiatric Clinical Hospital and a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of ULBS.
• Students, supported through psychological counseling
ULBS already has ongoing psychological counseling programs through the Comprehensive Student Services Center - SMARTHUB, designed to provide support to young people who are facing emotional difficulties or adaptation problems.
"At the "Lucian Blaga' University of Sibiu, we have, through the SMARTHUB Center, programs dedicated to psychological counseling for students," recalled Rector Radu. According to him, young people are increasingly feeling the negative effects of device addiction and social pressure generated by social networks. "Easy access to the internet allows any young person to live in an isolated and unknown world to those close to them. The lack of balance between the real and virtual worlds can deeply affect well-being," explained the rector.
• "Digital Age of Majority" and the risks of the virtual world
Sorin Radu emphasized that the problem of mental health among young people is closely linked to the excessive use of the online environment. He recalled that, at the European level, more and more states are discussing the establishment of a "digital age of majority”. "The European Commission supports initiatives to ban children from accessing social networks. France already requires parental consent for users under 15, and other countries - such as Denmark and Italy - are testing age verification applications”, the rector stated. According to him, excessive time spent online, constant comparisons and information overload favor the emergence of anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and decreased concentration.
"To counteract these effects, it is essential that universities and institutions promote psychological support programs”, added Radu. Through these initiatives, the "Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu aims to become a model of good practice in the field of mental health in the academic environment. The announced programs will contribute to the formation of a culture of mental balance, digital responsibility and solidarity towards vulnerable young people.
