China attacks global memory chips dominance

China is preparing to open a new front in the global technology war, after ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China's largest DRAM chip maker, is reportedly nearing the completion of validation of its first LPDDR6 memory chip, according to information presented by China Daily. The move to commercial production would represent a strategic leap for Beijing, which is trying to reduce the Chinese industry's dependence on foreign suppliers and weaken the dominance of Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron in the global advanced memory market.

The source cited indicates that CXMT is close to completing the validation stage of research and development, before the product is tested in small batches, qualified by customers and prepared for mass production. If the project follows the unofficially announced schedule, the Chinese company could start manufacturing the LPDDR6 chip later this year, joining South Korean leaders in a key technology generation for future smartphones and artificial intelligence systems.

The chip developed by CXMT would have a capacity of 16 gigabits and a projected speed of up to 12.8 gigabits per second, above the baseline of 10.7 gigabits per second shown for competitors' first LPDDR6 products. However, the reported specifications do not automatically guarantee final performance or industrial yield, two of the most difficult obstacles for any semiconductor manufacturer. The difference between a working prototype and millions of identical chips, manufactured profitably, remains the decisive test for CXMT.

The stakes go far beyond the mobile phone market. LPDDR, short for "Low-Power Double Data Rate,” refers to DRAM memory optimized for low power consumption, traditionally used in smartphones and tablets. But the explosion of artificial intelligence has quickly expanded its use to high-performance computers, AI devices, and data centers, where data transfer speed and energy efficiency have become critical criteria. LPDDR6 promises higher bandwidth and lower power consumption than the current LPDDR5X generation, which allows it to power more complex AI applications without turning battery life or energy bills into collateral victims of technological progress.

SK Hynix announced in March the development of its own 16-gigabit LPDDR6 chip, manufactured using a 10-nanometer-class process. The South Korean company claims that the new memory offers 33% faster speeds and improved energy efficiency by more than 20% compared to LPDDR5X. Samsung, in turn, presented its first LPDDR6 solution at CES 2026. CXMT is thus trying to enter a race in which its opponents no longer have the comfortable multi-generational technological lead that they had in the past.

A successful commercial launch would give Chinese manufacturers of phones, computers, and AI equipment a domestic source for a key component of their new products. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and other major Chinese manufacturers could integrate Chinese-made memory, reducing their exposure to trade restrictions and potential disruptions to international supply chains. For Beijing, the advantage would be twofold: reducing imports and building an industry capable of supporting AI development domestically.

CXMT's progress is all the more important because the United States has restricted China's access to advanced chips, manufacturing equipment, and high-performance HBM memory. The restrictions have been aimed at slowing the development of Chinese AI systems, but have also accelerated Beijing's investment in domestic suppliers. In this context, each new locally produced chip ceases to be just a commercial product and becomes a piece of China's economic security architecture.

CXMT, founded in 2016, has become China's main bet in the DRAM industry and is aggressively expanding its production capacity. The company remains smaller than Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, which together control most of the global market, but its rapid advance is starting to change the calculations of competitors. Having regained ground in the DDR5 segment, the Chinese manufacturer is now trying to prove that it can compete in the LPDDR6 generation, not only through low prices but also through technology.

Success is not yet guaranteed. CXMT must achieve high industrial yields, ensure product stability and convince large customers to integrate it into their devices. If it passes these tests, the production of LPDDR6 will not only mark the emergence of a new Chinese chip, but also bring China closer to one of its fundamental strategic goals: a technology industry where Western sanctions can cause difficulties but can no longer stop progres.
