Xi Jinping: Multipolarity can no longer be stopped

Chinese President Xi Jinping stated at the BRICS summit that the world is undergoing a historic transformation, marked by the rise of the Global South and the end of the monopoly held by a small group of powers over international institutions and rules. He presented BRICS as the primary cooperation platform for emerging economies and called on members to act as a vanguard force for the new multipolar order.

"Currently, the world is undergoing profound changes-a transformation unprecedented in the last century-with the Global South growing significantly and multipolarity becoming unstoppable. At the same time, unilateralism and power politics are on the rise, multilateralism and the international order are under attack, and deficits in peace, development, security, and governance are deepening. My proposals for global development, global security, global civilization, and global governance aim precisely to address these deficits and promote a better world. BRICS countries must stand firmly on the right side of history, act as pioneers of the times, steer the international order toward a fairer and more equitable direction, and work together to build a community with a shared future for mankind," the Beijing leader stated, according to the official speech published by the Xinhua news agency.

The Chinese President argued that unilateralism and power politics are intensifying, multilateralism is facing increasing pressure, and global deficits in peace, development, security, and governance are deepening. In his view, BRICS must uphold the authority of the UN, the sovereign equality of states, and the right of countries to choose their own development models.

According to the cited source, Xi Jinping stated: "BRICS countries should be pioneers in maintaining peace and stability. Today's world is far from peaceful, with change and chaos becoming increasingly prominent. Ultimately, this stems from the fracturing of the post-war international order and the failure to effectively uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. BRICS countries should stand firm, uphold justice, and strive to resolve conflicts and maintain peace. They should adhere to a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security; reject the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation; oppose violations of other countries' sovereignty and interference in their internal affairs; participate constructively in resolving hotspots; and make unique BRICS contributions toward finding solutions that address both the symptoms and the root causes of problems."

The Chinese leader criticized the use of sanctions, tariffs, and technological restrictions to curb the development of competitors. He called for upholding the WTO-centered multilateral trading system, reforming the organization, and rejecting all forms of protectionism. "We must oppose the abuse of tariffs and protectionist measures and uphold the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core," said Xi Jinping, warning that "decoupling," the disruption of industrial chains, and the policy of "small yards with high walls" cannot halt the development of emerging economies; instead, they will isolate the states promoting them and fragment the global economy.

Regarding global financial reform, the Chinese vision does not entail the immediate disappearance of the IMF and the World Bank, but rather the reduction of Western monopoly through the reform of existing institutions and the parallel development of the New Development Bank, local currency payments, and BRICS financial infrastructure.
