The new US Space Force uniforms, unveiled by President Donald Trump over the weekend on his Truth Social platform, have sparked controversy in the United States after several social media users compared their design to the aesthetics of Nazi uniforms, HuffPost reports. The design of the new uniforms is described as "inspired by the rigor and functionality of the Starship Troopers uniform, modernized for the guardians of space,” according to their presentation. The description also emphasizes the use of "satin black,” while the images presented by the US administration have fueled mixed reactions online. Many social media users have noted similarities that they consider close to the Nazi aesthetic. One of the commentators on X wrote that the uniforms go beyond what could be considered a simple parody and compared their appearance to SS uniforms. Another user said that the design did not suggest anything related to space exploration, but rather a Nazi uniform. Reactions also targeted the components of the equipment, including the helmet with a visor and leather boots, as well as the color palette dominated by shades of gray and black.

"Starship Troopers”, a film about a fascist regime

The controversy is also fueled by the choice of the film Starship Troopers as a declared source of inspiration for the design. Released in 1997 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, the sci-fi feature film depicts a society in which the Earth is ruled by a militaristic and fascist regime, at war with an alien species of arachnids. Director Paul Verhoeven described the film as an ironic vision of a "fascist utopia”. In an interview with The Guardian in 2022, he explained that he aimed to make a film about fascists who don't realize they are fascists and stated that the film was, in essence, about American politics. Thus, the choice of this production as an aesthetic reference for the uniforms of an American military structure has become, in turn, a subject of debate.

Comparison with the "Star Wars" universe

In the reactions in the British press and online environment, another comparison has emerged, with the uniforms of the officers of the Galactic Empire in the Star Wars series. In this case, too, it is a fictional universe in which the totalitarian regime is represented by characters and symbols inspired, in part, by the image of European authoritarian regimes, including Nazi Germany. These parallels have amplified the controversies related to the design chosen for the new Space Force uniform.

A major change from the current uniforms

The new uniforms are different from those previously worn by members of the American Space Force. Previous uniforms are navy blue and feature a looser tunic with six diagonally arranged buttons. The United States Space Force was created in 2019, during Donald Trump's first term, becoming the first American military structure to be established in more than six decades. The current controversy primarily concerns the aesthetic choice and the stated sources of inspiration for the new equipment, given that Starship Troopers is, by its author's very intention, a satire of militarism and fascism.
