Construction work increases again in the EU

Construction work increased in the European Union in December 2025, recovering after the decrease recorded in the previous month, according to Eurostat.

According to official data, construction work increased by 0.9% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU in December 2025, compared to November. These increases come after, in November, construction work recorded a decline of 1.5% in both the euro area and the EU. Among the member states, the most important increases in construction work were recorded in December in Hungary (6.6%), Poland (5.1%) and Slovakia (4%). According to Eurostat, data on Romania are confidential, notes Agerpres.

Also, at an annual rate, in December 2025, construction work decreased by 0.9% in the euro area and stagnated in the European Union. Among the Member States, the most significant increases were recorded in Slovakia (11.6%), Slovenia (10.2%) and Finland (6.6%). Again, the data for Romania are confidential.

According to data previously presented by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), in Romania, in December 2025 compared to December 2024, the volume of construction works, as a gross series, increased, overall, by 5.3%, and on structural elements, positive results were recorded for capital repair works (+31.1%) and for new construction works (+2.9%). In contrast, maintenance and current repair works decreased by 2.7%.

INS data reveal that, in the last month of 2025, by construction objects, non-residential buildings increased by 25.2% compared to December 2024, while engineering constructions and residential buildings decreased by 1.9% and 1.4%, respectively. As an adjusted series, depending on the number of working days and seasonality, the volume of construction works increased, in total, by 3.8%. By structural elements, the increase is highlighted in capital repair works (+34.3%) and new construction works (+1.6%). At the opposite pole were maintenance and current repair works, with a decrease in volume of 2.7%.

Depending on the construction object, the volume of construction works increased in non-residential buildings (+24.5%), but decreased in the case of residential buildings (-1.2%) and engineering constructions (-0.2%).

According to official statistics, from one month to another (December 2025 vs November 2025), the volume of construction works increased both as a gross series (+37.2%) and as an adjusted series (+7.2%).
