Premier League clubs have set a new record for spending in a single transfer window for the second year in a row, reaching almost 3.5 billion pounds this summer, the equivalent of around 4 billion euros, AFP reports. The amount exceeds last year's record of 3.6 billion euros, and confirms the financial scale of the transfer market in the English top flight.
• Manchester City, among the big spenders
The last two days of the transfer window contributed decisively to setting the new record. The transfer window closed on Tuesday, at 22:00 GMT, in the UK. Manchester City played an important role in this acceleration of spending. In the final hours of the transfer window, the club acquired Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. The deal, valued by the sports press at 145 million euros, equals the record amount paid by Liverpool in 2025 for striker Alexander Isak, transferred from Newcastle. In addition to Fernandez, Manchester City transferred midfielders Elliot Anderson, for 135 million euros, and Ayyoub Bouaddi, for 100 million euros. The club thus tried to compensate for the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders. With the transfer of Senegalese striker Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, Manchester City exceeded the threshold of 450 million pounds, approximately 525 million euros, spent this summer.
• Liverpool and Chelsea continue to invest
Liverpool, which lost several important players, transferred Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain. The value of the transaction could reach 145 million euros, depending on the fulfillment of certain clauses and the granting of bonuses. Chelsea continued their squad rebuilding process and acquired Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for 136 million euros. The Londoners also brought in players such as Maxence Lacroix, Emiliano Martinez, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck this summer. Tottenham, after a season considered disappointing, invested over 350 million euros in transfers.
• Transfer market exceeds new thresholds
The size of the spending reflects the financial capacity of the Premier League clubs, which continue to dominate the European transfer market. According to data cited by AFP, more than half of the 20 clubs in the English top flight have exceeded their own transfer records this summer. Several transactions have exceeded the 100 million pound threshold, confirming the accelerated growth in the value of top players and the amounts invested by English clubs.
