Global Investment Assets - $261 Trillion

US stocks and bonds account for 47% of the world's portfolio

The United States holds a significant share of global investment assets, with US stocks and bonds accounting for 47% of the world's portfolio. This dominance is driven in part by the solid long-term performance of the S&P 500 stock index and the major influence of US technology giants, according to visualcapitalist.com.

At the same time, the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency supports demand for US fixed income securities, notes the cited source, presenting a ranking of the global portfolio of investable assets, based on data provided by Goldman Sachs Investment Research.

Global Investment Asset Portfolio in 2025

Global equities total $127.9 trillion, with the U.S. alone accounting for 64% of global stock market capitalization, a historically high share, according to the source.

In recent years, AI-driven optimism has pushed U.S. stocks to record highs, pushing the U.S. share to its highest level in decades. By comparison, the U.S. accounted for only about 40% of global equities in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Meanwhile, Asia excluding Japan is a distant second, accounting for 12% of global investment assets. However, performance varies widely within the region. India's main stock exchange has generated annualized returns of 16% over the past five years, while China's Shanghai Stock Exchange has returned just 2.8% over the same period.

In third place in terms of investments are stocks from Europe (excluding the UK), with a total of $14.1 trillion. Japan is in fourth place (stocks of $6.4 trillion), and the UK is in fifth place (stocks of $3.8 trillion).

In terms of fixed income, global bond markets amount to $96.6 trillion. Here too, the US leads, with a share of 43%, while Europe is in second place, with 29%.

Beyond stocks and bonds, gold, with a value of $15.7 trillion, represents 6% of the global portfolio. Cryptocurrencies, however, remain a small part of the total, representing 1% of global assets, with a market capitalization of $2.6 trillion.
