Romanian President Nicuşor Dan said he estimates a period of approximately two weeks for the formation of the new Government, emphasizing the importance of clarifying the differences between the parties in the coalition before establishing a final formula.

In a press conference, Nicuşor Dan justified the two-week deadline by the complexity of negotiations in a coalition with several partners. "It is good that many of the things we expect to have differences on are written. We will not be able to anticipate everything, but at least potentially sensitive topics must be clarified in advance," the president said.

The deficit, the big problem

Nicuşor Dan met with representatives of the technical committee for budget and deficit, part of a broader consultation mechanism. "There is a Technical Commission on the budget, deficit, and about 15 commissions on other topics, along with discussions by political leaders", he said.

Romania is in a group of countries with excessive deficits and our country has the largest deficit, the president said. "We are in a group of countries with excessive deficits. It is true that we have the largest deficit among the countries with excessive deficits. Tomorrow there is a meeting of the Finance Ministers of the European Commission, of the countries of the European Commission, and they say that for each of the countries with excessive deficits, whether they have done or not, they will also say that we have done nothing," said Nicuşor Dan. Asked what assurances he will try to give the European Commission in the future, Nicuşor Dan replied: "There is an ongoing discussion with the Commission. We, Romania, promised a lot and did nothing, but now there is a new administration. We will try....The discussion is on two levels. There is a discussion with the Vice-President of the Commission, Mr. Dombrovskis (Valdis Dombrovskis - European Commissioner for Economy), which focuses on the deficit and a discussion with Mrs. Gauer (n.r. - Celine Gauer, EC responsible for the implementation of the PNRR) which focuses on the PNRR", said Nicuşor Dan.

Designation of the Prime Minister: "The discussion is ongoing"

Asked if he has another name for Prime Minister besides Ilie Bolojan, Nicuşor Dan avoided confirming a specific candidate: "The discussion is ongoing". The President reaffirmed that the appointment of a Prime Minister will only take place when there is clear support in Parliament, stating that there is no room for "political games” in this context.

In Vilnius, Nicuşor Dan stated that if there is a complete agreement on the government program and the composition of the cabinet, the appointment of the Prime Minister and the formation of the government can be achieved quickly: "If there is an agreement on both the government program and its composition, things will happen from one day to the next.” The political context remains fluid, and the next few days will be decisive for shaping a stable government majority. The President insists on clarity, predictability and responsibility in negotiations, in a political climate with high stakes.
