Presidential Advisor: Lack of Digital Progress Affects Economy and Favors Waste of Public Money

Versiunea în limba română

Corruption is one of the main obstacles to economic development, presidential advisor Radu Burnete warned in a Facebook post. According to him, "out of control” corruption leads to waste of public money, distortion of the private economy and promotion of incompetence to the detriment of performance. "Out of control corruption means wasted public money, therefore higher taxes than necessary. Corruption opens many doors through which the state enters the private economy and distorts it,” Burnete wrote. He stressed that, in the long run, such a situation prevents the formation of competitive economic actors, capable of competing on international markets and offering higher salaries.

Digitalization - an antidote to corruption

Burnete believes that the real digitalization of public administration is an essential tool in combating corruption and waste of resources. In his opinion, Romania has spent significant amounts on digitalization, but the results are far below expectations. "Beyond the well-known tools to combat this phenomenon, there is another one that we have talked about a lot in Romania, on which we have spent a lot of money and which still remains a distant desideratum: digitalization. Real digitalization,” the presidential advisor emphasized. He mentioned that digitalization would bring major benefits, from fairer public procurement and reduced tax evasion, to more efficient public services for citizens.

Codaşi on digital governance

Radu Burnete referred to a report recently published by the Edge Institute, which analyzes the state of digital governance in Romania. The document highlights the lack of coordination, excessive bureaucracy and the absence of a coherent strategy, factors that keep the country behind other European states in terms of digitalization of the administration. "We will have to roll up our sleeves and recover quickly in this regard, because the benefits will be on all fronts (...). Despite a decade in which many public resources have been directed in this direction, we have not made sufficient progress. This is a topic that I will focus on in particular. It cannot wait any longer", the presidential advisor said.
