Statistic: Foreign Tourist Inflow Up 7.9% In August

The number of arrivals of foreign visitors to Romanian border crossing points increased by 7.9% in August 2008 from August 2007, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS). The number of foreign visitors arriving in Romania was 1.09 million. Hotels reported 959,400 tourists, up by 4.3% from August 2007. Romanian tourists accounted for 82.7% of the total number of arrivals, while the 17.3% of foreign tourists was close to the percentage reported for August 2007. Most of the foreign visitors were from Europe (95.3%) of whom the majority from the European Union (63%). In the ranking of EU visitors, Hungary leads with 31.5% followed by Bulgaria with 15.1%, Germany with 11%, Poland with 8.9% and Italy with 7.7%. Approximately 1.78 million Romanians left the country in August (+27.5% y/y) of whom 81.8% by car. In the first eight months of the year, the hotel occupancy rate averaged 36.1%, down by 0.7 percentage points from the corresponding period of 2007.
