Study: Traffic Noise Affects Wildlife Over Long Distances

Versiunea în limba română

Noise generated by road traffic affects wildlife over much greater distances than previously estimated, including in natural areas far from roads, according to a study conducted by Ben-Gurion University, cited by Xinhua.

The research shows that: traffic noise reaches natural areas and even protected zones; its impact is not limited to the immediate vicinity of roads; dense vegetation can, under certain conditions, amplify sound propagation, contrary to expectations.

These findings challenge the idea that forests always act as a "shield” against noise.

Direct Effects on Animal Behavior

Road traffic noise is identified as a major pollutant, with effects on: communication between individuals; reproductive behavior; orientation and survival.

For the study, researchers used birds' reproductive behavior as a key indicator, as it is considered highly sensitive to acoustic disturbances. To assess the real impact, the team applied the concept of soundscape: they combined data from multiple studies; analyzed different types of traffic and habitats; and developed a large-scale map of sound propagation in nature.

This approach allows for a more accurate understanding of how noise affects ecosystems.

Implications for Biodiversity Conservation

The study's authors emphasize the need to: integrate animal behavior into environmental policies; rethink road infrastructure planning; and adopt measures to reduce noise pollution.

The findings suggest that the impact of human activities on wildlife is more extensive than previously believed, including in areas that were considered relatively protected.
