UBB - European grant of 2.5 million euros for a project dedicated to Romanian Orientalism

The "Babeş-Bolyai” University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca has obtained a new ERC Advanced Grant research grant, worth 2.5 million euros, within the European Union's Horizon Europe program, considered the most prestigious European competition in the field of research, according to the institution. The project, entitled "RORIENT: Romanian Orientalism: Inter-imperial Entanglements in World Literature”, is coordinated by Anca Pârvulescu, professor of English literature at Washington University in St. Louis (USA) and UBB affiliated researcher.

• Comparative study on Romanian Orientalism

The project benefits from a funding of 2.5 million euros and aims to carry out a comparative literature study that analyzes the orientalist literary discourse in Romanian culture. According to UBB, the research aims to develop an innovative methodological model for studying Orientalism globally, taking as a starting point the experience and specificity of Romanian Orientalism.

UBB Rector Daniel David emphasized that European Research Council (ERC) grants represent the highest level of European competition in scientific research. "ERC grants represent the pinnacle of European competition in scientific research. As Rector, I have always wanted to test and prepare UBB in this competition, so that up to now six such projects with UBB affiliation have been won, five of which after 2020," said Daniel David. He also welcomed Anca Pârvulescu's new success, pointing out that, after coordinating a major grant funded by the PNRR, the researcher continues her activity within UBB by winning an ERC Advanced Grant, one of the most prestigious funding for research at the European level.
