PENNY Romania, a concept of the German group REWE, ended 2025 with a turnover of 10.6 billion lei (over 2 billion euros), up 12.01% compared to the previous year, according to the announcement made yesterday by the retail company. It opened 40 new stores, reaching 456 units nationwide. At the same time, 2025 was an anniversary year: PENNY marked 20 years of presence on the Romanian market.
PENNY's expansion plans target investments of 3 billion euros by 2035, with the aim of expanding the network to 1,000 stores and developing logistics skills. For 2026, the company plans new store openings to get even closer to consumers. Daniel Gross, CEO of PENNY Romania, said yesterday in a press conference: "2025 was a landmark year for PENNY Romania, marked by exceeding the 2 billion euro turnover threshold and the 40 new stores opened, which brought us even closer to our customers. We completed the fifth logistics center and continued to support Romanian manufacturers and invest in our team. In addition, we marked 20 years of presence in Romania - a moment that reflects our journey and commitment to our customers. We continue with the plan for the coming years: 1,000 stores and 3 billion euros of investments by 2035."
• 456 stores and 5 logistics centers
In 2025, PENNY Romania operated 456 stores and 5 logistics centers, after the completion of the fifth warehouse, in Mihăileşti, Giurgiu County. The new logistics center is the first in the PENNY network to operate 100% without gas heating. Currently, the PENNY network has 464 stores.
Last year, PENNY continued to optimize the shopping experience in all units of the network, expanding the areas dedicated to fresh products and developing the ready-to-eat range and the portfolio of private labels, according to company officials.
• 3RO range, expanded
PENNY continues to develop its portfolio of private labels, available exclusively in its stores. Through the 3RO initiative, the company promotes products with the main ingredient from Romania, processed and packaged in the country. In 2025, the company strengthened partnerships with local suppliers and expanded the 3RO range, including by selling 100% Romanian fresh meat. Currently, 88% of PENNY suppliers are Romanian companies registered in Romania. Also, 68% of the company's turnover comes from products manufactured in Romania, and the 3RO assortment represents 55% of PENNY Romania's total turnover.
• Digitalization
The year 2025 brought progress in the digitalization of PENNY Romania services. Home delivery services were expanded through the new partnership with Bolt Food, along with Glovo, Wolt and Bringo. In 2025, PENNY processed over 980,000 home delivery orders, from 205 stores, in 75 localities. The Click & Collect service allows customers to order online and pick up products from the store at the chosen time. The PENNY Card loyalty program brought together, at the end of the year, 4.2 million customers with digital and physical cards.
In 2025, the PENNY team had 8,000 employees.
PENNY is the largest food donor in the Regional Food Banks Network in Romania. In 2025, the company donated 5,401 tons of food from stores and logistics centers, helping to support hundreds of thousands of people in need.
