Unprecedented April in Spain: Temperatures reach a new historical record

Spain recorded its warmest April on record, according to preliminary data published by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and cited by AFP. The average temperature reached 15.1 degrees Celsius, slightly exceeding the previous record set in 2023. The series of measurements, which began in 1961, has never recorded such a warm April. According to AEMET, the difference from the previous record is only a tenth of a degree, but the significance of this exceeded threshold is considered relevant in the context of current climate trends.

The data indicate that April 2026 was 3.2 degrees Celsius warmer than the average for the period 1991-2020, being classified as "extremely warm". In addition, six days with record temperatures were recorded nationwide during the month, based on data series going back to 1950. The trend is also confirmed for the entire year. The first four months of 2026 are already among the warmest in the history of measurements, with 12 episodes of extreme temperatures recorded so far. In a stable climate, specialists estimate that such a number would have been around five for the entire year.
