General strike in healthcare: protests begin today

The SANITAS Federation announced the start of the labor conflict against the economic and social policy promoted by the Government, and will organize a warning strike today and a general strike of indefinite duration starting on July 28. According to the union organization, the actions will respect all the stages provided for by the legislation in force.

• The union demands a new salary law and the resumption of social dialogue

The main demands of the SANITAS Federation aim to strengthen the public healthcare system through policies that would stop the exodus of medical personnel, ensure decent working conditions and salaries, and guarantee the population's access to quality public healthcare services. At the same time, the union calls for the development of a unitary salary law negotiated with the union organizations, which would eliminate inequities in the system and protect the incomes of public sector employees. Another requirement is to respect social dialogue, by consulting unions before adopting measures that affect public sector employees. "We did not choose the strike. The government pushed us towards it," declared the president of the SANITAS Federation, Iulian Pope, claiming that the Executive has given up on social dialogue and is promoting a salary law without real negotiation with employee representatives.

• Emergency medical activity will be ensured

The Federation specifies that, during the strike, legal obligations regarding the continuity of medical services will be respected. Emergencies and mandatory activities will be ensured in all health units, with at least a third of normal activity being maintained, so that the life and health of patients are not put at risk. According to SANITAS, 523 health units have been notified of the labor conflict, and both members of the federation and unaffiliated employees or members of other union organizations can join the strike.

• "The protest is to save the public system”

Union leaders claim that the protest is not directed against patients, but aims to draw attention to structural problems in the public health system. "The SANITAS strike is not against patients. It is a protest to save the public health system, before it is pushed into an even deeper crisis. We refuse to accept the Government's attempt to turn medical personnel into scapegoats for its own mistakes,” said Iulian Pope, quoted in a statement from the federation.

SANITAS representatives claim that the delays in the salary reform and the lack of social dialogue are due to successive governments, and the current Executive continues this approach by promoting legislative projects without consulting social partners.
