Over 1,500 researchers have benefited from the "Eugen Ionescu” scholarships

The "Eugen Ionescu” doctoral and postdoctoral scholarship program, funded by the Government of Romania and administered by the University Agency of La Francophonie (AUF), has so far supported over 1,500 doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from the member states of the Francophonie, contributing to the development of academic cooperation and increasing the international visibility of Romanian universities. The data were presented on the occasion of the ceremony dedicated to the 19th graduation of the program, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) and the University Agency of La Francophonie.

• 111 fellows from 19 countries completed internships in Romania

According to the president of the Delegation of the Romanian Parliament to the Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie and the rector of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest, Sorin Cîmpeanu, in recent years the scholarships have been financed by both the Romanian state and the universities in Romania. "The total number amounts to over 1,500 "Eugen Ionescu” fellows. (...) This year, 111 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from 19 countries on four continents completed their internships in 30 Romanian universities. The fields are extremely varied, from literature and medicine to engineering and agronomy,” said Sorin Cîmpeanu. He emphasized that the program contributes both to the promotion of Romanian research and to the consolidation of Romania's role within the Francophone space.

• Romanian universities aim to attract young researchers

The rector of the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, Mihnea Costoiu, highlighted the importance of opening Romanian universities to researchers from all over the world. According to him, the program creates opportunities for long-term collaboration, and some of the scholarship holders choose to continue their activity in Romania. "We open the door of our universities to very valuable people. Many of them return for joint projects, and some want to stay in Romania. We are open to offering them this opportunity,” said Mihnea Costoiu.

• Francophony, an instrument of international cooperation

The Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Luca Niculescu, recalled that Romania supports Dacian Cioloş for the position of Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), while presidential advisor Dacian Cioloş stressed the importance of Francophony as an instrument of international cooperation. "Francophonie means access to a community made up of 90 states from all continents. The scholarship holders are true ambassadors of Romania in their countries and contribute to strengthening the image of our country", declared Dacian Cioloş. The "Eugen Ionescu" program, financed by the Government of Romania and managed by the University Agency of Francophonie, annually brings doctoral students and researchers from Francophonie states to Romanian universities, being considered one of Romania's most important contributions to academic and scientific cooperation within the International Organization of Francophonie.
