The Romanian National Team is preparing for one of the most complicated exams in recent years: the confrontation with Turkey, in the semi-finals of the World Cup play-off. The match, scheduled for Thursday evening, comes in a context in which the difference in form and experience seems to tip the balance in favor of the hosts.
• An opponent on the rise
Turkey is going through a good period, with a competitive generation, with players present in top championships and an aggressive style of play, the Turks start as clear favorites, especially in front of their own supporters, known for the incandescent atmosphere they create. On the other hand, Romania is trying to compensate through organization and discipline what it lacks in terms of individual value and consistency. The coach is betting on a pragmatic game, with an emphasis on defense and counterattack, aware that any mistake could be decisive.
• Low chances, but not non-existent
Experts estimate that Romania's chances are limited, but not zero. The history of football is full of surprises, and play-off matches have often offered unexpected results. For Romania, the key will be defensive resistance and the ability to capitalize on the few attacking opportunities. A possible positive result would represent not only a sporting performance, but also an important moral boost for Romanian football in search of identity and international performance.
• Pressure of the moment
The stakes of qualification weigh heavily on the shoulders of Romanian players, especially given that absence from the World Cup final tournaments has become a constant in recent years. Supporters are hoping for exemplary mobilization and a game that will demonstrate that differences can be reduced through determination and team spirit. At the same time, Turkey gives the impression that it is already thinking about the play-off final, which may generate additional pressure for the favorites.
• Stanciu wants to see Romanians happy
Our team captain, Nicolae Stanciu, stated that it has been a long time since the Romanian national team participated in a World Cup and mentioned that he and his teammates want a victory in the play-off with Turkey to make "an entire country happy”: "Everyone is thinking about the match with Turkey. It doesn't matter if I score or not, or who will start the match. I think that what is more important for us and for our country is to qualify for the World Cup no matter how. We all know that the World Cup is the maximum for any player. We want to get to play there. It has been many, many years since Romania has been there. So we want to go to the World Cup and make an entire country happy. We will leave everything on the field to succeed in this. If it doesn't happen, because nothing is certain in football no matter how well you play, then I want us to leave the field without regrets and "We are happy that we did everything we could to win." "I am happy to be here again, that I am healthy and can play. It was quite difficult in the last matches, because in my career I was with the national team almost all the time. The atmosphere is the same as the last time I was with the team, there is a good mood, all the players are happy to be here and play for the national team. At the same time, everyone is focused because we have an important match ahead of us and we are aware of this," added Stanciu, who is in the national team's training camp. The midfielder believes that any player in the squad called up by coach Mircea Lucescu can handle the pressure of the match with Turkey. "We are ready, we have time to analyze the opponents and prepare for the match. The coach will tell us what we need to do, he will give us all the details about them. We know most of them because we like to watch football. We are 26 players and anyone who enters the field could handle such a match. For us, this is the first time we are in a World Cup play-off and we will treat it as such. We will not think about who we will meet in the next match, but we will focus only on the match with Turkey", explained Stanciu.
The Romanian national football team will face Turkey on Thursday in Istanbul at 7:00 p.m. in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup play-off. Depending on the results of the play-off semi-finals, on March 31 at 9:45 p.m., the national team coached by Mircea Lucescu will play in Slovakia or Kosovo, either a decisive match for qualification or a friendly match with the loser of the other semi-final.
