The Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova will jointly mark Romanian Language Day today, through a festive session organized simultaneously in Bucharest and Chisinau. The event will include lectures dedicated to the evolution and use of the Romanian language, its cultural and identity status, as well as the impact of artificial intelligence on the language.
The event will take place from 11:00, in the Aula of the Romanian Academy and in the Sala Azurie of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and is organized in partnership with the National Museum of Romanian Literature. The opening remarks will be delivered by the President of the Romanian Academy, Marius Andruh, present in Chisinau, and by the President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Ion Tighineanu.
• Lectures on the evolution and status of the Romanian language
The festive program will bring together members of the Romanian Academy and specialists from its research institutes, who will address topics regarding the evolution, use and identity status of the Romanian language. The President of the Romanian Academic Council, Ioan-Aurel Pop, and the Vice President of the Romanian Academy, Mircea Dumitru, will speak about the relationship between language and nation and about the role of the national language in the European cultural space. Prof. Rodica Zafiu, corresponding member of the Romanian Academy, will address the relationship between the spontaneous use of the language by speakers and the cultural authority of the linguistic norm. In turn, Fr. Dr. Bogdan Tătaru Cazaban, scientific researcher at the Institute of History of Religions of the Romanian Academy, will present the liturgical sources of the literary Romanian language.
• Romanian Language in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The Bucharest session will conclude with a lecture dedicated to the situation of the Romanian language in the context of the development of artificial intelligence, given by the Director General of the National Museum of Romanian Literature, Ioan Cristescu. The program will continue with a poetry recital given by actor Marius Bodochi. Public participation in the Romanian Academy Hall is free, and the festive session will be broadcast live on the Romanian Academy's YouTube channel.
• Romanian Language Day, established in Romania in 2013
According to the Romanian Academy, the events dedicated to this day are part of the institution's mission to cultivate and standardize the national language, through the development of dictionaries, grammars, anthologies, studies and research, as well as through cultural activities. Romanian Language Day is celebrated annually on August 31. The date marks the moment in 1989 when the Parliament in Chisinau voted the law on the return of the Romanian language and Latin script in the Republic of Moldova. In 1990, the Republic of Moldova established the same date for the celebration of "Our Language", and in Romania, August 31 was consecrated as Romanian Language Day by a decision of the Parliament adopted in 2013.
