Flood in America and Asia, consistent rains in Europe!

Versiunea în limba română

The rains covered the entire globe. From the US to Nepal and from Mexico to Romania, water creates problems, big or small.

The death toll from Hurricane Helene in the eastern and southeastern United States has risen to 93, and millions of people in 10 states are facing massive power outages, according to local authorities. The devastating phenomenon left behind a path of destruction, desolate landscapes and desperate communities struggling for survival. Helene, which reached the coast of Florida with the force of a category 4 hurricane, struck with winds of up to 225 kilometers per hour, causing unprecedented destruction.

Mobilization of the authorities and the huge impact on the infrastructure

US President Joe Biden expressed his deep sorrow for the loss of life and warned that recovery will be a long and difficult process. A federal state of emergency has been declared in six states, including Florida and Georgia. Federal Disaster Management Agency (FEMA) forces have been mobilized, and response teams are working non-stop to restore electricity and rebuild destroyed infrastructure. One of the main obstacles is the lack of electricity, with millions of Americans affected. In Valdosta, Georgia, residents fear for the health and safety of their families due to a lack of supplies in stores, while road networks are paralyzed by power outages that have blocked traffic lights.

On the other hand, at least 15 people died after Hurricane John hit the state of Guerrero in southern Mexico, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced.

Heroic destruction and rescue efforts

In Florida, areas like Cedar Key were badly affected, with roofs ripped off and homes completely destroyed. "It's a real tragedy," said Gabe Doty, a local employee. Rescue teams also intervened in Tennessee, where the risk of a dam breaking was prevented in time and patients at a hospital were evacuated by helicopter due to flooding. According to climatologist Andra Garner, warming sea waters played a crucial role in the rapid intensification of Hurricane Helene, a phenomenon that could become more frequent due to climate change.

Nepal floods: tragic toll

Meanwhile, in Nepal, floods and landslides caused by torrential rains have killed at least 148 people and 59 others are missing. The overflowing waters particularly affected the capital Kathmandu and other important regions in the east and center of the country. More than 3,000 people were mobilized to support rescue operations, many of whom were evacuated by helicopters and inflatable boats. Nepal's Interior Ministry reported that more than 5,400 people have been evacuated from the affected areas, and rescue teams continue to work to clear roads and prevent further catastrophes. In a global climate context marked by increasingly frequent extreme phenomena, the human and material impact of hurricanes and floods is becoming more and more devastating, experts warn.

Thousands of people, evacuated to Romania

More than 5,400 people from 28 localities in four counties were evacuated, Sunday, until midnight. IGSU announces that effects of the weather were recorded in 90 localities in 27 counties, where trees and poles blown down by the wind damaged 11 cars and 2 houses. "On September 29, in the time interval 07:00 - 24:00, in the context of the manifestation of dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena, operative crews acted in 90 localities from 27 counties (AR, AG, BC, BT, BR, BV, BZ, CJ, CT, CV, DB, GL, GR, HD, IL, IS, IF, NT, OT, PH, SJ, SB, TM, TL, VL, VS and VN) and the Municipality of Bucharest for removing the effects generated by bad weather . During this period of time, due to the heavy rainfall, the rescuers intervened to support the population to evacuate water from 10 houses, 14 courtyards, 6 cellars, 3 basements of blocks, 1 public institution, 1 economic operator warehouse and 11 streets", he transmitted IGSU. Also, due to the strong wind, the firefighters acted to clear 45 trees and 2 electricity poles that had fallen on the road. As a result of these events, 11 vehicles and 2 buildings were damaged. "As far as road traffic is concerned, it was difficult to drive on the national roads DN 11/BC and DN 3/IF and the county roads DJ 248A/IS and DJ 687/HD due to the accumulated water on the road. Also, railway traffic was temporarily stopped on railway section no. 202 between the town of Simeria/HD and the town of Petroşani/HD because of a tree that fell on the contact line", the cited source added. By Sunday midnight, 5,438 people were evacuated from 28 localities in 4 counties. The ports of Constanţa North, Constanţa South and Mangalia were closed on Sunday evening, due to the strong wind, informed the Infotraffic Center of the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police. According to the quoted source, maneuvers for maritime and river transport in the three ports were suspended.

The head of DSU Raed Arafat announced that he expects Galati County to be affected by floods again: "Additional measures have been taken in all the localities that will be under Code Orange during the day or during the night and of course they are under Code Orange for 24 hours for hours. The measures include increasing the capacity of the Emergency Inspectorates by doubling the number of firefighters on duty, i.e. bringing one more shift out of the three shifts to work throughout the duration of the code. Second in a row, in Galati we have the 1,000 firefighters involved in the preventive zones in the area, especially since in Galati we expect a serious impact considering that there were situations several days ago and that there is a possibility that the rains to have an impact on areas that have been flooded before and adjacent areas". In preparation for the floods, the authorities in Bucharest organized several video conferences in which attention was drawn to attention to vulnerable people and communication with the population, the head of the DSU also notes.
