Marine heatwaves pose a growing threat to human health, with their effects going far beyond the degradation of marine ecosystems, coral bleaching and declining fish stocks, according to a new study cited by Xinhua. Researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia and the University of Hong Kong are calling for marine heatwaves to be recognized as a major public health issue, arguing that their impact on humans has so far been insufficiently analyzed, despite growing evidence of the consequences for coastal communities.
• High ocean temperatures amplify risks
The study, published in the scientific journal Nature Sustainability, shows that prolonged periods in which ocean temperatures remain at unusually high levels can trigger a series of effects that directly affect the health of the population. The consequences identified by the researchers include increased extreme weather events, reduced seafood availability and increased risk of mental health problems in communities that depend on the marine environment. Marine heatwaves have become more frequent, more persistent and more intense as the climate warms, the study authors say. The phenomenon has been associated with mass marine mortality, coral bleaching, harmful algal blooms and significant disruptions to fisheries and aquaculture.
• Human impacts understudied
Laura Falkenberg, the University of Adelaide researcher who led the study, says the human impacts of marine heatwaves have received far less attention than the environmental impacts. According to the researchers, extreme ocean temperatures can contribute to the formation of more intense weather systems, which can amplify the risks associated with storms and flooding. At the same time, the proliferation of harmful algae can lead to the contamination of seafood and, implicitly, to the emergence of risks for the health of the population.
• Additional pressures on coastal communities
The impact of the phenomenon is not limited to direct physical risks. The reduction of marine resources and the disruption of fishing and aquaculture activities can affect coastal communities that depend on these activities economically and for food. The researchers therefore argue that marine heat waves must be analyzed not only in terms of the effects on biodiversity and ecosystems, but also from the perspective of the consequences on the health and well-being of the population. The study highlights the need for a broader approach to the phenomenon, as climate warming contributes to the increase in the frequency, duration and intensity of episodes of extreme ocean temperatures.
