The Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (UBB) was ranked 962nd globally in the prestigious Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2025. The performance positions it as a national leader and among the best 4.5% of universities in the world. UBB is the only Romanian university that has managed to enter the CWUR world top 1,000, an important distinction in the international academic landscape, given the rigor of the criteria used to achieve this ranking. "We are pleased that UBB manages not only to remain in the world top 1,000 and in first place in the country, but also to slightly improve its position compared to last year,” said Vice-Rector Szasz Levente, responsible for quality assurance and entrepreneurship at UBB.
• Comprehensive assessment on four key dimensions
The CWUR ranking is one of the most comprehensive and respected internationally. The evaluation of universities is carried out based on four essential categories of academic performance: Quality of education (25%) - based on the academic achievements of graduates; Employability of graduates (25%) - measured by their presence in leadership positions; Academic distinctions of academic staff (10%) - such as international awards and professional recognition; Quality of research (40%) - with an emphasis on the international impact of scientific publications.
These criteria provide a comprehensive picture of the institutional and academic performance of universities, beyond simple notoriety or size.
• Performance, the fruit of a long-term strategy
UBB representatives believe that this success is the result of a sustained strategy of increasing quality in all dimensions of university activity - from teaching, to research and international involvement. "It is a confirmation of the results generated by the constant efforts of our university to develop performance in teaching and research activities,” emphasized Vice-Rector Szasz Levente. He added that the continuous monitoring of international rankings is a valuable tool for self-evaluation and adjustment of strategic directions. With a tradition of over 150 years and a constant presence in relevant international rankings, Babeş-Bolyai University confirms its status as a flagship institution of Romanian higher education.
