The "George Emil Palade" University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology (UMFST) in Târgu Mureş is beginning the implementation of the strategic project "REVIVE for Romania" - a national initiative for the digital transformation of the healthcare system, valued at 43.2 million lei (approximately 8.1 million euros). The project is supported by non-reimbursable European funding, as announced last week by the university's rector, Professor Leonard Azamfirei, MD, PhD.
• Artificial Intelligence, Medical Data, and Cybersecurity
As the lead partner, UMFST will coordinate a national program aimed at developing several key areas relevant to contemporary medicine. The project's focus areas include artificial intelligence and clinical decision support, medical data management, cloud technologies and system interoperability, as well as cybersecurity and data protection.
The initiative also encompasses automation, robotics, and digital laboratories, alongside fields such as biotechnology, molecular diagnostics, personalized medicine, and bioethics. According to Rector Leonard Azamfirei, the project aims to develop the skills and knowledge infrastructure necessary for the nationwide application of advanced technologies in healthcare.
• The project complements the university's healthcare ecosystem
"REVIVE for Romania” is part of the university's "UniCity” strategy and complements the ecosystem developed around the "George Emil Palade” University Clinical Hospital - a "Smart Hospital.” The model aims to integrate technology, medical data, research, and clinical practice within a shared development framework. "REVIVE for Romania thus adds a new component to this model: the development of the skills and knowledge infrastructure required to utilize advanced healthcare technologies on a national scale,” stated Leonard Azamfirei. Through this project, the university aims to contribute to enhancing the capacity of the Romanian medical system to employ digital solutions and advanced technologies in both clinical and research activities.
