European Union tightens rules on packaging and waste

New regulations on packaging gradually come into force in the European Union starting Wednesday, with measures aimed at reducing the volume of waste and its impact on the environment and health, dpa reports. According to EU data, in 2023 each inhabitant of the community block generated, on average, 177.8 kilograms of packaging waste. In recent years, the amount of waste has increased at a faster pace than the recycling rate.

• Packaging placed on the market will have to be recyclable

The new regulations stipulate that packaging placed on the European market must be recyclable, with the objective of reducing the volume of packaging waste by 15% by 2040. At the same time, disposable plastic containers for drinks will have to contain a minimum proportion of recycled material. From 2030, manufacturers and importers will have to minimise the amount of packaging used for their products.

• Restrictions on PFAS

The new rules also introduce stricter limits on so-called "forever chemicals", known as PFAS, in food packaging from Wednesday. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are used to make paper and cardboard water and grease resistant. However, they are a concern for the environment and health because they are very difficult to break down and can persist for long periods.

• EU encourages reusable packaging

The regulations also aim to expand the use of reusable packaging. From February 2029, this will have to be clearly labelled and distinguishable from single-use sales packaging. Guarantee-return schemes for plastic bottles and drinks cans are also planned for the coming years. Single-use plastic packaging for fresh produce will also be banned from 2030. The measures are part of the European Union's efforts to reduce packaging waste and increase the reuse and recycling of materials used in the economy.
