AUR's moves to suspend President Dan

AUR's campaign against President Nicuşor Dan did not stem from the nomination of Siegfried Mureşan, nor from the alleged delay in that process. The sequence of events shows that the goal of suspension took shape prior to the most recently cited reason. Each stage of the political crisis provided a new justification for the same objective.

May 18, 2025 - George Simion loses the presidential election.

Nicuşor Dan wins the runoff with 53.6% of the vote, compared to 46.4% for George Simion, according to results certified by the Central Electoral Bureau. From that moment on, AUR launched an unrelenting political campaign against the winner.

May 20-22, 2025 - Simion attempts to have the result annulled.

The AUR leader alleges foreign interference and demands the annulment of the vote. The Constitutional Court unanimously rejects the challenge as unfounded. The Permanent Electoral Authority declares that the election took place in a climate of integrity, fairness, and transparency. The challenge to the election result failed legally but continued politically.

July 1, 2026 - AUR turns impeachment into an official objective.

AUR's National Steering Council unanimously decides to initiate proceedings for the impeachment of Nicuşor Dan and the holding of early elections. The party cites alleged constitutional violations regarding the nomination of the prime minister and announces it will not vote for any coalition government.

The email address belonged to Nicolae Capcelea, the owner of Follow Digital Solutions-a firm that had received over 10.6 million lei from AUR for online election campaigning between 2024 and 2025.

August 6-10, 2026 - impeachment becomes an organized public campaign.

AUR promotes the platform, seeks support, and urges citizens to pressure members of parliament. The party claims to have gathered 112 of the 155 signatures deemed necessary to initiate the procedure. Impeachment is already serving as a theme for electoral mobilization, even though AUR lacks the majority required to see it through to completion.

September 17, 2026 - Nicuşor Dan nominates Siegfried Mureşan. The President selects the candidate who, based on the outcome of consultations, garnered the most support. Nicuşor Dan points to Mureşan's experience in European negotiations and warns that the parties are more concerned with electoral interests than the national interest.
