Romania is taking a decisive step towards the complete digitalization of the medical system. The first modules of the new Health Insurance Information Platform (PIAS) will be operational by the end of this year, and the entire system will be fully operational by August 2026, announced Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete.
"The new PIAS platform is the largest digitalization project in the history of the Romanian medical system - a 100 million euro investment, financed by the PNRR. It is a firm commitment of our team and a reform that we are bringing to fruition,” the minister said on his Facebook page. The new digital infrastructure will completely transform the way the patient-doctor-insurer relationship works. Among the main benefits announced: the total elimination of paper forms; referral tickets, medical letters and sick leave will be completely digital; the patient's electronic file and electronic prescription will be integrated and accessible from a single place; the medical history will be able to be consulted at any time, directly from the phone or computer.
The minister emphasized that the new platform represents not only a technological modernization, but also a change in mentality. "I know that over the years, many have lost confidence when they heard the word digitalization. But now it is different. The pace is accelerated, the work is visible, and the benefits will be felt directly in the life of every patient and every doctor," said Rogobete. The PIAS platform aims to increase transparency and efficiency in the health system, reduce bureaucracy and provide fast and secure access to medical information. "We work honestly, we listen to the system, we listen to people and we correct as we go. Every day counts and every step forward means more trust in the public health system," concluded the minister.
