Spain prepares for total solar eclipse

Spain is preparing intensively for the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon that will be fully visible in the north of the country and that is already attracting thousands of tourists and astronomy enthusiasts. According to Spanish authorities, it is the first total solar eclipse visible from Spanish territory since the one in 1912, which makes the event a historic moment for both the scientific community and the tourism sector, informs the EFE agency.

The Iberian Peninsula, one of the few inhabited places on the globe where the eclipse will be total

The eclipse will be visible in its total phase only in a few regions of the world. In addition to Greenland and the western extremity of Iceland, Spain will be the main inhabited territory where the Moon will completely cover the solar disk, notes AFP. In Spain, the band of totality will cross the northern part of the country, including cities such as La Coruña, Leon, Burgos, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Teruel and the island of Mallorca. The phenomenon will also be fully visible in a small area in northeastern Portugal.

Two minutes of darkness at sunset

In the most favorable observation points, the totality phase will last just over two minutes. During this time, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, and the sky will suddenly darken, giving viewers the opportunity to observe the solar corona, one of the most spectacular manifestations of stellar activity. The peculiarity of the eclipse in Spain is that it will take place at sunset, which could create spectacular images and special photographic conditions.

Yebes Observatory, official monitoring center

The Spanish government has designated the Yebes Observatory, located approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Madrid, as the official monitoring center for the phenomenon.

The 2026 eclipse is the first event in the so-called "triple eclipse”, a rare sequence of three major eclipses that will be visible from Spain in 2026, 2027 and 2028. On 2 August 2027, southern Spain will witness a total solar eclipse with an exceptional duration of around six minutes, one of the longest of the century. In January 2028, an annular solar eclipse will occur, a phenomenon in which the Moon does not completely cover the solar disk, leaving a bright circle around it visible, known as the "ring of fire”.

Explosion in accommodation prices

The huge interest in the eclipse has already led to spectacular increases in accommodation rates in areas along the path of totality. In Teruel, prices for apartments available on 12 August range from 300 to 1,400 euros per night. In Burgos, options under euro600 have become almost non-existent, with some mid-sized apartments being listed for as much as euro5,000 per night. This increase reflects the global interest in the event and is turning the eclipse into a major economic opportunity for rural areas of Spain, which typically don't attract such large numbers of visitors in August.

A major scientific and tourist event

The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, is considered one of the most important astronomical events of the decade in Europe. For Spain, it represents not only a unique opportunity for scientific observation, but also a powerful driver for tourism and international promotion. For astronomers, photographers and sky enthusiasts, the little over two minutes of total darkness will be a rare natural spectacle that will not be repeated on the European continent anytime soon.
