Târgu Mureş has been officially included in two European networks dedicated to the conservation and promotion of Art Nouveau heritage, the Reseau Art Nouveau Network and the Art Nouveau European Route. The accession, carried out by Visit Mureş, Târgu Mureş City Hall and the Mureş County Museum, aims to increase the international visibility of the city and the development of cultural tourism.

Over 150 buildings with Art Nouveau elements

According to the Visit Mureş Association, the official representation of the municipality in the two European structures will be ensured directly by the tourism promotion organization. The accession places Târgu Mureş in an international network of cities that conserve, research and promote the Art Nouveau heritage and the Secession style, contributing to increasing the visibility of the municipality in the European cultural tourism circuit. "Târgu Mureş has one of the richest Art Nouveau architectural profiles in Romania,” claims Visit Mureş. According to the association, over 150 buildings in the urban area retain original elements of this style, from facades and architectural ornaments to ironwork, decorative details and stained glass. Among the representative buildings are the Palace of Culture and the Administrative Palace, two of the city's main architectural landmarks.

Heritage, transformed into a tourist resource

Membership in the two European networks has not only a heritage conservation and research component, but also one related to tourism promotion. Visit Mureş believes that the inclusion of the municipality in these structures can strengthen Târgu Mureş's position in the European community interested in Secession heritage and can contribute to attracting new flows of tourists interested in architecture and culture. To mark the membership, the association launched a bilingual brochure dedicated to the local Secession heritage. The material presents the most important historical monument buildings and includes their technical descriptions. At the same time, the brochure proposes an urban itinerary for tourists, designed to facilitate the discovery of the main architectural landmarks of the municipality.

A new positioning for cultural tourism

By being included in the Reseau Art Nouveau Network and the Art Nouveau European Route, Târgu Mureş can more effectively capitalize on its architectural heritage in a specialized European circuit. For the city, the stakes are both the preservation of historical buildings and their transformation into a cultural and tourist resource. The Art Nouveau heritage can thus become a distinctive element of the identity of the municipality and an additional argument for including Târgu Mureş in European cultural tourism itineraries. The partnership between the local administration, museum institutions and the tourism promotion organization provides, in this context, the framework for a coordinated promotion of the local architectural heritage outside Romania.
