Versiunea în limba română

Obesity and alcohol consumption significantly increase the risk of breast cancer in women as they age, according to a study conducted by researchers in Australia and cited by Xinhua. The research was coordinated by the University of Sydney and published in the journal BMJ Open. The analysis was based on data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health, which included: more than 12,700 women aged 45 to 50; a monitoring period of 25 years; 941 cases of breast cancer diagnosed during this period. The data allowed the assessment of the relationship between lifestyle and the risk of the disease.

Obesity, a major risk factor

The results show that: overweight or obese women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer; maintaining a healthy weight remains an essential prevention factor. An important result of the study is that: any level of alcohol consumption was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer; the risk is not limited to heavy drinking. The researchers also assessed other elements of lifestyle: women without a life partner had a higher risk;

smoking and hormone replacement therapy were not associated with an increased risk in this sample.

Implications for public health

The study emphasizes the importance of: controlling body weight; reducing alcohol consumption; monitoring risk factors as you age. The results may contribute to improving prevention strategies and raising awareness of lifestyle risks.
