European funds to expand palliative services

Eight medical units in Braşov, Alba, Harghita, Mureş and Sibiu counties will benefit from major investments in the infrastructure for palliative services, through projects financed from European funds. The total value of the signed contracts is 206.4 million lei, of which almost 100 million lei represent eligible funds, according to the Regional Development Agency (ADR) Centru. The targeted hospital units are located in Braşov, Victoria, Aiud, Cristuru Secuiesc, Vlăhiţa, Târnăveni, Luduş and Sibiu, thus covering an extensive and diversified regional network of medical services dedicated to patients in advanced chronic stages or in palliative care situations.

According to the ADR Centru, the projects are part of the call "Investments in the infrastructure of units providing palliative services", financed by the Health Program. The main objective is to create or modernize the infrastructure necessary for the development of palliative care services in public health units and in centers that already offer this type of care. The investments will cover: the construction or expansion of dedicated buildings; the modernization and rehabilitation of existing spaces; the provision of modern medical equipment; improving accessibility for patients; the transformation of health units that treat acute patients into palliative care centers.

"As an Intermediate Body for the Health Program, ADR Centru was assigned eight more financing contracts by the Managing Authority. Thus, at the level of the Central Region there are now 47 projects managed by ADR Centru, financed from the Health Program", informs the institution. The beneficiaries are public health units coordinated by local authorities, but also NGOs specialized in palliative care services, which ensures a mixed approach, with coverage in both urban and semi-urban areas in the region.

ADR Centru currently manages 47 financing contracts, totaling almost 634 million lei, concluded under priorities 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 of the Health Program. These projects target both hospital infrastructure and the digitalization component or the development of regional medical networks. Projects dedicated to palliative care represent an essential part of the regional strategy, in a context in which Romania continues to have a major deficit of centers and services for patients with advanced chronic diseases. The expansion of these services through European funds contributes to reducing the pressure on hospitals, improving the quality of life of patients and modernizing the healthcare network.
