The "George Emil Palade" University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology in Târgu Mureş is taking a major step towards consolidating cutting-edge medical research, after signing the financing contract for the largest project in its history. It is NeuRoX - Establishment of the Romanian Center of Excellence in Clinical Neurosciences, a project worth approximately 17 million euros, which will be implemented over five years. The announcement was made last week by the rector of UMFST Târgu Mureş, prof. univ. dr. Leonard Azamfirei, who specified that the funding was obtained within the competitive call "Centers of Excellence - 2024 Call". "UMFST Târgu Mureş is becoming an international pole of innovation in clinical neurosciences," the rector said, underlining the strategic importance of the project for the university and for Romanian medical research. The total budget of the project amounts to 85.9 million lei, and the implementation period is 60 months, NeuRoX being the largest research effort ever coordinated by the institution.
• Neurotechnology, artificial intelligence and precision medicine
According to the rector of Azamfira, the Romanian Center of Excellence in Clinical Neurosciences will function as an innovation hub, aimed at accelerating progress in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of neurological diseases. The project relies on the integration of neurotechnology, artificial intelligence and multi-omics approaches, with an emphasis on the development of precision medicine. NeuRoX will develop preclinical and organoid models, develop therapeutic neural interfaces and strengthen bioinformatics analysis to better understand the genetic mechanisms involved in neurological diseases. Research will also aim to discover biomarkers and innovative therapies, especially for neurodegenerative diseases, using transcriptomics and advanced biological models.
• Extended national partnership
The project is implemented by UMFST Târgu Mureş, project director and director of the NeuRoX Center being Prof. Dr. Roxana Cărare, with the support of the European Projects and Research Service, coordinated by Nicoleta Suciu. NeuRoX brings together a large academic and medical consortium, in partnership with:
Târgu Mureş County Emergency Clinical Hospital; Transilvania University of Braşov; National Institute for Research and Development in Pathology and Biomedical Sciences "Victor Babeş” Bucharest; UMF "Iuliu Haţieganu" Cluj-Napoca;
UMF "Grigore T. Popa" Iaşi. The clinical component will be closely linked to the "George Emil Palade" University Clinical Hospital, benefiting from the high-performance computing infrastructure and the future Data Center of the university. The Rector of UMFST emphasized that NeuRoX also represents a strategic leap towards internationalization, the project having the potential to increase the visibility of the university and its capacity to collaborate with major European research centers.
