UAE: Absolute temperature record for May

Versiunea în limba română

The United Arab Emirates last week recorded a historic temperature record for May, reaching 50.4 degrees Celsius in the Al Shawamekh region of the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The information was transmitted by the National Center for Meteorology on the X platform (formerly Twitter) and confirmed by the AFP agency. It is the highest temperature ever recorded in May in the desert Gulf country, since the beginning of meteorological measurements in 2003. The previous record, of 50.2 degrees Celsius, had been set in 2009.

An unprecedented heat wave in April as well

The heat wave in May comes after an already unusually hot April. On April 27, the temperature reached 46.6 degrees Celsius, the second highest ever recorded for the month, after the record of 46.9 degrees set in April 2012. In addition, April recorded a record high average temperature of 42.6 degrees Celsius. Emirati authorities have repeatedly issued warnings to the population, recommending constant hydration and avoiding outdoor physical activity during extreme temperatures.

Climate efforts in an "oil country"

Despite its status as a major global oil exporter, the United Arab Emirates is investing heavily in renewable energy sources in an attempt to diversify its energy resources and adapt to the realities of climate change. Recent temperature records increasingly reflect the impact of global warming in arid regions, where the consequences can be particularly harsh on public health, agriculture and infrastructure.
