The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP), the National Union of Bars of Romania (UNBR) and the Ministry of Education and Research have signed a collaboration protocol to promote electoral and legal education among young people. The event took place on the occasion of the celebration of 22 years of activity of AEP and marks a new step in consolidating democratic culture in schools. The signed document provides for the organization of educational modules, workshops, conferences, debates and campaigns dedicated to pupils, students and teachers. The main goal is to raise awareness of the importance of electoral processes, respect for the law and civic involvement. "In an era where information circulates faster than ever, disinformation has become one of the biggest challenges for society. It is not limited to fake news or conspiracy theories, but reacts subtly, distorting facts, amplifying fear and undermining trust in public institutions,” said Zsombor Vajda, president of the AEP. He stressed that the formation of an authentic democratic culture must become a national priority, and collaboration between institutions, the press and citizens is essential for rebuilding public trust:
"Only by stimulating critical thinking and through honest, open and transparent communication can we hope to diminish the harmful effects of disinformation.”
Present at the event, the Minister of Education, Daniel David, stated that the Romanian educational system needs a content reform, which should include more civic and legal education. "The paradigms in which we have developed up to this point are already old for a modern country. Some have their roots in the communist period, and my mission is to change these paradigms - not an easy task,” said Daniel David. He explained that the new civic skills could be integrated into the mandatory subject "Counseling and Guidance,” taught at all levels of education - primary, secondary and high school. "Through this protocol, we will take democratic education more seriously than it has been treated so far. We can introduce learning units dedicated to these topics, from democracy and elections to legal education,” added the minister.
• Education for active citizenship
The representatives of the three institutions specified that the new partnership aims to train young people as active, responsible and informed citizens, capable of understanding and appreciating the values of the rule of law. The activities carried out in schools and universities will be supported by electoral experts, lawyers and teachers trained in the field. These will aim to familiarize young people with the fundamental principles of democracy, justice and civic participation. The protocol between AEP, UNBR and the Ministry of Education has a duration of two years, with the possibility of extension, and is part of the series of initiatives through which the Romanian authorities try to strengthen civic and legal education in schools - an area considered deficient in relation to the current needs of society.
