Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Beijing for a two-day state visit aimed at reaffirming the strategic ties between the two powers, according to news agencies. Putin's visit comes just days after the meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping during May 13-15, the first visit by an American president to China in the last nine years, according to CNN and the Chinese press.
The two leaders signed a joint declaration on strengthening their "comprehensive” partnership and advocated for "a multipolar world and a new type of international relations”, according to the Xinhua agency and Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. Putin stated that the talks with Xi were "friendly, warm and constructive”, with relations between the two states being at an "unprecedented level”, according to TASS, while Xi underlined that the two countries had managed to "deepen mutual political trust and strategic coordination with resilience that remains unwavering despite trials and tribulations”, according to Xinhua.
• Energy, the summit's priority
Energy cooperation was the central topic of the discussions, in the context in which Russian oil exports to China increased by 35% in the first quarter of 2026, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
Putin stated that "Russia and China are actively cooperating in the energy sector”, with his country being "one of the largest exporters of oil, natural gas - including liquefied gas - and coal to China”, according to TASS, while Beijing has become Russia's main trading partner.
The Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which would transport gas from western Russia to northern China through Mongolia, was at the center of attention, being viewed as an alternative for the European markets lost by Moscow and as a way for Beijing to reduce its dependence on seaborne energy, according to the South China Morning Post and OilPrice.com.
• Geopolitical coordination
Xi Jinping also addressed the conflict in Iran during the talks with Putin, stating that "a comprehensive ceasefire is of the utmost urgency, the resumption of hostilities is even more undesirable, and maintaining negotiations is particularly important”, according to Xinhua.
The White House announced that Trump and Xi agreed that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons and on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while both China and Russia are close partners of Tehran and have played a key role in shielding it from American sanctions, according to CNN.
Both Beijing and Moscow have sought to take advantage of Trump's overturning of traditional American foreign policy in order to promote their own vision of a world not dominated by American power or by a US-led alliance system, according to CNN, while the two leaders are expected to announce their aligned vision in a declaration on the "establishment of a multipolar world”, according to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.
