More than half of NATO allies have pledged to participate in a program to purchase US arms and ammunition for Ukraine, said Mark Rutte, the alliance's secretary general, after a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels yesterday.

Mark Rutte also announced that NATO would take additional measures to combat Russian drones, stressing: "In particular, new integrated systems are being tested to combat air targets. We will expand and accelerate our efforts. I believe this is a clear example of rapid and effective cooperation, made possible by NATO.”

The NATO Secretary General also stated that the alliance will respond to hybrid threats using integrated systems to combat air threats, stating: "We will continue to build on this model, responding to hybrid threats, including those from drones, and we will continue to develop our mechanisms for sharing capabilities between allies. We are testing integrated systems that will help us detect, track and neutralize air threats.”

Mark Rutte also declared: "NATO is a defensive alliance. It will remain a defensive alliance, but make no mistake, this defensive alliance is ready and willing to do whatever it takes to keep our one billion people safe and to protect our territory." Rutte stressed that there is no overlap between NATO and EU efforts regarding counter-drone projects, noting that NATO focuses on military capabilities, while the EU leverages its industrial and financial resources.

Mark Rutte: "We shouldn't take the Russians too seriously”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte played down Russia's military power yesterday, urging alliance members not to overestimate Moscow's capabilities and intentions, saying, according to censor.NET: "We shouldn't take the Russians too seriously. Allies should not exaggerate Russia's capabilities. We know that their fighter pilots are notorious for not knowing how to operate these aircraft properly, and their captains don't know how to drop anchor, judging by all the things they leave on the seabed.”

Germany transfers fighter jets to Poland for NATO patrols

Germany will station Eurofighter fighter jets at the Malbrok air base in Poland, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced yesterday, according to dpa.

"We will contribute to the protection of NATO's eastern flank with patrol flights," the German official said at yesterday's meeting in Brussels, noting: "This makes us even more active, present and visible on the eastern flank of the alliance."

NATO launched a new mission in September, called Eastern Sentry, to strengthen the protection of the airspace of member states in eastern Europe, after a series of air border violations by Russia, and the Eurofighter jets represent an additional German contribution to that mission, according to dpa.

"When Russian President Vladimir Putin tests our borders, whether in Poland, Estonia or elsewhere, we respond decisively, quickly and effectively," Pistorius warned.

NATO defense ministers met yesterday to discuss ways to strengthen the alliance, following multiple Russian incursions into European airspace.

Mark Rutte: "NATO reacts proportionately to threats in its airspace. We will not shoot down an aircraft in NATO airspace if it does not pose a threat, but if it does pose a threat, I can assure you that our military has all the authority."
