Rector Marian Preda signed the Memorandum of Accession of the University of Bucharest to the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies, strengthening the institution's involvement in educational, cultural and scientific projects dedicated to Ukraine.
The document was signed together with representatives of Babeş-Bolyai University and Stefan cel Mare University of Suceava, in the presence of Olena Zelenska and State Counselor Diana Punga.
By joining this international coalition, the University of Bucharest assumes an active role in promoting Ukrainian studies and in developing academic cooperation with institutions in Ukraine and other states. The Memorandum provides for collaboration in areas such as: developing educational and research programs; organizing conferences, round tables and thematic debates;
exhibitions and film screenings; academic and cultural exchanges; access to specialized educational and scientific resources. At the same time, the partnership aims to combat disinformation by strengthening international university cooperation and promoting studies dedicated to Ukraine. Currently, 80 Ukrainian students are enrolled at the University of Bucharest. In addition, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures teaches Ukrainian within the programs dedicated to Slavic languages and cultures. According to the institution, joining the coalition will allow access to international academic networks, thematic working groups and new opportunities for collaboration with universities, libraries, archives and cultural institutions in Ukraine.
• Concrete projects undertaken by UB
The University of Bucharest has already announced a series of initiatives that will be carried out within the coalition, including: organizing a panel on the development of Ukrainian studies in Romania and abroad; carrying out activities dedicated to cultural diplomacy; involving professors and researchers in editorial projects and thematic groups. The involvement of the University of Bucharest in supporting the Ukrainian academic community began immediately after the outbreak of the war. In 2022, the United Nations recognized the university's contribution to supporting Ukrainian refugees, through logistical, educational and academic integration measures. In February 2026, through the Virtute et Sapientia Foundation, the University of Bucharest launched a support campaign for the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The initiative aimed to collect power banks, portable batteries, voltage stabilizers and generators, necessary for the continuation of teaching and research activities in the context of frequent power outages. By signing this memorandum, the University of Bucharest strengthens its role in the European and international academic network and reaffirms its commitment to supporting education, research and cultural exchanges in support of Ukraine and its university community.
