The period 2015-2025 was the hottest ever recorded, according to a report published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which warns that "all key climate indicators are in the red" and the planet is "pushed beyond its limits", Reuters reports. According to the report: 2025 was the second warmest on record; the global average temperature was about 1.43 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels; the conclusions confirm previous WMO assessments of the top warmest years.
In parallel, 2024 remains the warmest recorded to date, about 1.55 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.
The report highlights an accelerated degradation of the cryosphere: the loss of glacier mass is among the five worst episodes on record;
"Exceptional” decreases have been reported in Iceland and North America.
These developments confirm the global trend of accelerated melting, with impacts on water resources and natural hazards.
• UN warning: "a global climate emergency”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said:
"The state of the global climate is in a state of emergency. Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits.” The message underlines the rapid worsening of climate phenomena and the need for immediate action. WMO data shows that the planet is dangerously close to the limit set by the Paris Agreement, through which governments agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Exceeding this threshold could have major consequences: intensification of extreme weather events; rising sea levels;
affecting food security and water resources.
