The cultural sector in Romania will benefit from funding of over 47 million euros under the new edition of the EEA (European Economic Area) and Norway Grants, the Ministry of Culture announced. The amount represents a significant increase compared to the budget of 34 million euros allocated in the previous financial year, corresponding to the period 2014-2021. According to the ministry, the program dedicated to culture will benefit from a total allocation of 47.5 million euros, obtained following the signing of memoranda of understanding and the activity carried out by the Project Management Unit (UMP).
• Budget increased by almost 40%
Andras Istvan Demeter described this achievement as an important step towards consolidating the financing of culture in Romania. "It is a milestone victory for a team of professionals who have demonstrated that cultural expertise deserves adequate financial support. We are moving from 34 to over 47 million euros, a success that honors us and makes us responsible," the minister said. The budget increase of approximately 40% reflects, according to officials, the recognition of the impact that previously funded cultural projects have had on local communities and on the national heritage.
• Over 200 cultural projects funded in the last decade
The Ministry of Culture emphasized that the experience gained in managing EEA and Norwegian funds was the basis for obtaining the new financial allocation. During the period 2013-2025, the Project Management Unit managed three successive programs, funded by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The results of these programs include: the restoration and revitalization of historical monuments; the organization of museum exhibitions; the support of film, theater and music festivals; implementing over 200 cultural projects at national level.
These achievements have demonstrated the administrative capacity of the ministry to manage complex programs, with direct effects on the cultural sector and on the preservation of heritage.
• Essential investments for heritage and cultural industries
Ministerial officials believe that securing this financial package provides continuity to investments in culture and heritage, in a European context characterized by intense competition for accessing resources.
The funds will be able to support both heritage conservation projects and contemporary cultural initiatives, contributing to the development of creative industries and increasing public access to culture. In the coming period, the Ministry of Culture will go through the administrative procedures necessary to establish the structure of the program and to consult partners from donor states.
The institution announced that it will constantly inform cultural operators and the public about each procedural stage, so that the future launch of the funding program ensures transparent and efficient access to these European and Norwegian resources.
