Two of the most important higher education institutions in Iaşi, the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza' University of Iaşi and the "Gr.T. Popa' University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iaşi, will increase tuition fees starting with the 2026-2027 academic year. According to official data, the increases differ significantly, depending on the field and study program. The information was confirmed by university representatives. At the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iaşi, fees will increase between 11% and 87%, but not all programs will be affected. Faculties such as Letters, Physical Education and Sports or Geography - for programs in foreign languages - will maintain the current level of fees. Rector Liviu George Maha emphasized that, in most cases, these are not real increases, but adjustments to inflation. "In 80% of cases, it is not even a matter of updating the value of fees, but of partially covering the devaluation of the currency and the increase in prices,” the rector explained. He specified that, currently, most fees are between 1,100 and 1,750 lei per semester, remaining below the level practiced by comparable universities.
However, for three faculties there are increases above the inflation rate, justified by:
recovery of adjustments postponed in previous years; real operating costs; alignment with the level of fees in other universities. At the "Gr. T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the increases only target future students. According to spokesperson Ivona Burduja: Medicine and Dentistry: the fee increases from 10,000 lei to 13,000 lei; Pharmacy: the fee increases from 8,000 lei to 9,000 lei. The other faculties and master's programs will keep the current fees.
UMF representatives explain the decision by: increasing operational costs; increasing costs of utilities and teaching materials; the need to maintain quality standards. The university has kept fees unchanged for four years, despite financial pressures. Both institutions cite the same main causes: increasing salaries in the education system; increasing costs of utilities; increasing costs of materials and services; the need to align with real public financing. Officials emphasize that the increases will only affect students admitted starting with the 2026-2027 academic year.
