Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete draws attention to the danger of bacterial resistance in hospitals and emphasizes that the uncontrolled use of latest-generation antibiotics can affect the long-term effectiveness of treatments. The official also stated that in the case of infections at the "Sfânta Maria" Hospital in Iaşi, it is not the doctors who are to blame, but the control authorities and the management of the unit.
• Antibiotic control - essential preventive measure
In a TV intervention, the Health Minister explained that one of the effective solutions for reducing the microbial load in intensive care units is strict antibiotic control. "There is this tendency for an intensive care patient to be given a state-of-the-art antibiotic, which is good for the patient at the moment, but in the medium and long term it is bad for the ward. Pathogenic germs develop resistance to lower-class antibiotics, and these treatments lose their effectiveness," said Rogobete. Examples of such practices already exist, the official says, in some hospitals in the country, such as in Timisoara, where ICU ward heads have implemented stricter antibiotic administration protocols.
• Risk of bacterial resistance
Public health specialists have been warning for years that antibiotic resistance represents one of the biggest medical threats globally. Excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics accelerates the emergence of resistant bacteria, which makes infections much harder to treat. Minister Rogobete insisted that clinical decisions must be balanced and made with the long-term impact on intensive care units and future patients in mind.
• The case of the "Sfânta Maria” Hospital in Iaşi
Referring to the situation of children infected with a bacteria at the "Sfânta Maria” Hospital in Iaşi, the minister stated that the responsibility does not belong to the doctors. "This is not about doctors who did not do their job, but about the indolence of the Public Health Directorate, which did not control the outbreak, and about the administrative and procedural negligence of the management team of the health unit,” Rogobete declared.
The minister's statements emphasize the need for firm measures for the management of antibiotics in hospitals, so as to limit the emergence of resistant germs. At the same time, the case in Iaşi highlights the importance of careful monitoring by public health authorities and clear responsibility at the administrative level.
