The Romanian Ministry of Education and Research and the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science will create a bilateral working group to develop proposals to ensure the rights of the Romanian minority to education in their mother tongue. The decision was agreed by Romanian Minister Daniel David and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Yevhen Kudriavets, during a videoconference discussion.
The group will bring together representatives of the two ministries, regional authorities in Ukraine and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both states. Its mandate aims to formulate solutions in "compliance with the international commitments undertaken by Ukraine", according to the Ministry of Education. The dialogue took place in the context of the educational reform implemented by Ukraine at the level of high school education, a reform with a direct impact on schools where teaching is done in Romanian. According to the cited source, the results of the working group's activity will be analyzed at the ministerial level "as soon as possible." "As I have said in various contexts, a Romanian Minister of Education and Research must respond in person and be involved every time Romanian communities abroad request his support in promoting the national language and culture," said Daniel David, emphasizing the importance of protecting access to education in Romanian, for which he is requesting a funding guarantee. In parallel, the Minister of Education paid a visit to Chisinau, where he met with his counterpart from the Republic of Moldova, Dan Perciun. The two officials assessed the status of joint projects and discussed the launch of a new program through which Romanian teachers would provide Romanian language courses for various local communities. The project is also to be presented at the next meeting of the prime ministers of the two countries.
