The awakening of the Romanian people in their conscience, preached as a messianic truth by Călin Georgescu, lasted only six months. From November 24, 2024 to May 26, 2025, when, seduced by Georgescu's speech and then simply by his presence around the "younger protege", 5 million Romanian citizens with the right to vote were ready to take us out of the European Union and NATO and send Romania to the edge of history..

On May 26, 2025, when the entire sovereignist camp was expecting a massive protest in Constitution Square, at the moment of the oath-taking by President Nicuşor Dan in the plenary session of Parliament, nothing notable happened. The protest initially announced by George Simion, later disavowed by him, but heavily promoted on social networks (especially on TikTok), failed miserably: instead of the tens of thousands or millions anticipated, there were only a few dozen people in the square. Or as the newspaper BURSA wrote, "three on a stick".

It seems that the followers of sovereignism, loyal to Georgescu and Simion, were discouraged by the rain that fell on the Capital all day Monday. The situation is not new: a low attendance was also noted at the signature collection in March in Constitution Square, as well as at the protest organized after the rejection of Georgescu's candidacy by the BEC and CCR. The conclusion? Sovereignism only works when it's warm and sunny, that is, between three and five months a year. Some might say that, from November 24, 2024 until now, God did not want Călin Georgescu. Or maybe he turned his face away from him. Maybe because of the hatred and verbal violence propagated by his supporters against any critical voice. Maybe because of the rainbow umbrellas unconsciously waved by some protesters in Constitution Square, symbols associated with the LGBTQ+ community.

The tiny number of protest participants was the decisive signal for Georgescu that he had lost the game. He realized that he had bet on a losing horse, that his "protege" had failed to channel popular enthusiasm and that the people, after a brief awakening, had chosen to go back to sleep. In addition, faced with new accusations made by the Prosecutor General's Office after, on a Realitatea TV show, he quoted a passage from Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, thus violating the conditions of judicial control, Georgescu decided to withdraw. Not permanently, but temporarily.

Călin Georgescu: "This stage of the sovereignist movement has ended from my point of view"

And he announced his withdrawal through a video post on social networks, in which he spoke for 12 minutes, during which Călin Georgescu also managed to say the following: "The world is tired of conflicts, wars, chaos, haste, violence and excess of politics. In Romania, the exaggerated political struggle has led to deprofessionalization. When people's attention, stimulated and speculated upon by the media, is focused on the political struggle, of course, irrelevant to the well-being of society, it means that people in professions essential for the functioning of the country, entrepreneurs, craftsmen, artisans, peasants, doctors, teachers, military, are left on the sidelines. Thus, the country cools down. Professionalism develops a country, while excessive politics weakens it. Today, politics seems to have filled all the space.

(...) The moment when we find ourselves does not ask us to rebel with anger, it does not ask us to offend others. It invites us to do something much more important, to wake up consciously and responsibly. (...) Looking honestly inside ourselves, we must admit that we have allowed what hurts us now to happen. Only by assuming this responsibility do we learn to be a source of clarity and peace even in the midst of chaos. (...) First of all, the elections for the position of President of Romania in 2025 have ended. Along with these, I have chosen to end my active involvement in the political process, considering that this stage of the sovereignist movement has ended from my point of view. I want to emphasize that this choice is a personal one and does not imply any judgment on those who continue to support this cause. I choose to be, from now on, a passive observer of public and social life. It is not a renunciation, but a responsible choice, made with respect for the people and with understanding of the current situation. I am now focusing all my attention and energy on my family, who needs peace and especially health after this intense and tumultuous period. I choose to remain outside any party structure. I am not part of any political party, parliamentary or non-parliamentary, and I am not politically affiliated in any way. I choose to maintain a neutral and equidistant position, without political affiliations. I do not wish to hold any position in the Romanian state in the current situation. I have no intention of taking over the leadership of any political party and I will not follow up on such proposals. I do not aim to create a political platform and I do not intend to establish a party. (...) At this moment, I choose not to participate in consultations or debates on current or future political issues, considering that my role is to be an attentive and responsible observer. However, if I see that the rights of those who chose differently are violated or injustices and abuses appear, I will get involved again with a clear voice to defend the principles of democracy and freedom. Even though this political chapter has ended, I am convinced that the values and ideals for which we fought together remain unshakable. I am ready to return when a serious opportunity arises that will bring real benefits to Romania and the Romanian people. (...) My dears, I have always said that we will make history, not politics. And that is what we have done. My fight is seen in my actions, in all the domestic and international efforts to resume the second round in December 2024 and in the 2025 campaign. The proof of my fight is my scars and those of my family".

Mission or political marketing? Instead of the promised unity, Georgescu's presence only brought division

A simple analysis of Georgescu's speech leaves you stunned by the enormities he uttered, not to mention the meaningless and illogical repetitions discovered by ChatGPT in the text spoken by the former sovereignist candidate.

Călin Georgescu claims that he fulfilled his mission. What was his mission? The one whose result we saw before and immediately after May 18, 2025? Was his mission political marketing? Or what was it? What we see left after Călin Georgescu is a national division caused by himself. He did not boast that he would brings national unity? On May 18, we found that the nation was divided into 6 million pro-Europeans and 5 million sovereignists. This is not unity, but national division. And the division is also proven by the wave of hatred and threats that have flooded social networks from Georgescu and Simion's followers and voters towards citizens who declared themselves pro-European and towards the media.

Moreover, Georgescu says that he is waiting for a serious cause to return. We are talking about the same Georgescu who has been driving us crazy for the last six months that there was a coup d'etat on December 6, 2024, that democracy was overthrown. What should we understand from what Călin Georgescu said two days ago? That the coup and the overthrow of democracy are not serious causes, for which it is worth continuing to fight?

And there is something else to mention: in his entire withdrawal speech, Călin Georgescu did not mention the name George Simion even once. He did not even use the phrase "my younger protege". Why?

By withdrawing, Călin Georgescu confirms the statement of Diana Şoşoacă, who said that the former sovereignist candidate is nothing more than a comet of the system that has fulfilled its mission to enmity the Romanian people and that he is a coward, because he did not have the courage to face her but let his followers threaten the family and children of the SOS MEP.

We mention that yesterday, following his hearing at the General Prosecutor's Office in connection with his recent appearance on Realitatea TV, prosecutors decided to expand the criminal investigation into Călin Georgescu in connection with the promotion of ideas, concepts or fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic doctrines. We recall that at the end of February the Prosecutor General's Office decided to initiate criminal proceedings and indict Călin Georgescu for committing six crimes, the most important of which is instigation of actions to change the constitutional order. In this case, the criminal prosecution is being carried out with the defendant Georgescu at large, but under judicial control. According to the preventive measure taken by the prosecutors, during the judicial control Călin Georgescu must fulfill the following obligations: not to leave the country; to inform the Police about the change of residence; not to create/use accounts on online social platforms on which to post content of a legionary, fascist, anti-Semitic, racist or xenophobic nature; to report to the police body designated by the Ilfov IPJ, which will establish the surveillance program; to report to the criminal prosecution body and to the judge of rights and freedoms, to the preliminary chamber judge, whenever necessary. summoned; not to own or carry a weapon.
