The University of Bucharest (UB) becomes the first higher education institution in Romania to enter the world's top 100 of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025, occupying position 93 globally. The ranking evaluates the involvement of universities in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a first for Romanian education: UB ranks for the first time in the top 100 institutions worldwide, in a top dominated by elite universities from around the world.

Remarkable performance on gender equality

The University of Bucharest obtains the best score for Goal 5 - Gender Equality, where it ranks 3rd worldwide, confirming its commitment to inclusion and academic equity. UB also ranks: in the top 25 worldwide for Quality Education (SDG 4), in the top 36 for Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions (SDG 16), in the top 83 for Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), in the 84th place worldwide for Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8). The university reported results for 9 of the 17 UN goals, occupying the first national position for 7 of them. Among them: Quality Education, Gender Equality, Decent Work, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities, Peace and Justice, and Partnerships for the Global Goals.

"This exceptional positioning in the top 100 worldwide and in the top 3 for gender equality reconfirms the mission of the University of Bucharest to be a space of excellence, inclusion and social responsibility. It is a recognition of the efforts of the entire academic community”, declared Marian Preda, the rector of UB.

Performance of other Romanian universities

Of the 25 universities in Romania included in the ranking, the following stood out:

Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest: 201-300 (up from 401-600 in 2024), score 80.1 out of 100; Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca: 401-600 range; Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu: also in the 401-600 range. Both institutions - ASE and UB - are in the 101-200 range for Goal 17 - Partnerships for the Goals, being national leaders in this regard.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025 assessed a record number of 2,318 universities from around the world. The ranking is unique in the academic environment due to its emphasis on the social, economic and environmental impact of universities, through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN in the 2030 Agenda.
