Artificial Intelligence and Genetics, Allies in the Fight Against Cancer

Versiunea în limba română

The STAR-UBB Institute of the Babeş-Bolyai University (UBB) in Cluj-Napoca continues the "Studium Generale” lecture series hosted by the Tailors' Tower, with a current and provocative theme: "Pathology of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Genetics in the Fight Against Cancer”. The lecture will be given by Dr. Rareş-Potcoavă Buiga, a second-degree scientific researcher at the STAR-UBB Institute, according to the educational institution. Dr. Rareş Buiga will detail how the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms with genomic analysis radically transforms the approach to oncological diagnosis. "The integration of these technologies allows for the identification of biomarkers, risk stratification and the establishment of much more precise diagnoses”, the UBB press release states.

Practical examples will include: AI models that detect subtle histopathological changes, tumor sequencing that guides targeted therapies, and the application of these results in personalized clinical decisions. The conference will also address ethical and regulatory challenges, as well as the need for rigorous clinical validation before large-scale application.

Collaboration between specialists for progress in oncology

The need for interdisciplinary collaboration between pathologists, geneticists, and data engineers will be highlighted to accelerate progress in personalized oncology medicine. Participants will gain an overview of concrete directions for research and clinical application, where the analysis of complex biological data becomes essential for more effective and better adapted treatments for each patient. The "Studium Generale” program, coordinated by the STAR-UBB Institute, provides a space for interdisciplinary dialogue between professors, students, and guests of the university. Inspired by the tradition of medieval universities, the project promotes reflection on the "universal questions of knowledge", bringing together science, philosophy, art and ethics. Launched in 2019 by prof. univ. dr. psych. Daniel David, the current Minister of Education and Research, the "Studium Generale" program aims to connect academic research with major contemporary themes, from the ethics of artificial intelligence to the impact of genetics on modern society.
