Torrential rains in Catalonia and chaos in transport

Versiunea în limba română

Spanish authorities have announced the death of a person following torrential rains that hit the province of Catalonia and caused chaos in transport. Firefighters found a body in the river in the town of Sant Pere de Riudebitlles, north of Barcelona, while searching for two missing people whose car was swept away by the waters. "Authorities are trying to determine whether this is one of the missing people or if he is the victim of an unrelated incident,” the firefighters said on the X network.

Spectacular rescues at Montserrat

The bad weather also caused a landslide that blocked the Montserrat monastery funicular. Firefighters intervened to rescue 27 people trapped in the middle of the cable car. The heavy rains severely disrupted air traffic. Dozens of flights to and from Barcelona airport, Spain's second-largest, were delayed or cancelled. Rail transport was severely affected: several lines were temporarily suspended due to landslides and fallen trees on the tracks.

A new extreme episode in Spain

Sunday's phenomenon is part of a series of extreme weather episodes that Spain has faced in recent months. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of torrential rains in the Mediterranean region, where periods of severe drought alternate more often with violent storms. Local authorities have appealed to the population to avoid non-essential travel, to comply with weather warnings and to constantly obtain information from official sources.
