The academic options of young Romanians who choose to study abroad are changing, according to the latest data published by IntegralEdu. While the Netherlands and the United Kingdom remain at the top of their preferences, the number of applications to these destinations has decreased considerably: by 34% for the Netherlands and 50% for the United Kingdom. In contrast, Spain is climbing spectacularly, registering a 140% increase in applications and occupying third place in the top of preferences. "More and more young people are choosing Spain due to its socio-cultural affinity and the expansion of study programs in English,” explains Alexandra Bădescu, Deputy General Manager of IntegralEdu.
• New destinations on the radar
In addition to the traditional countries - Belgium, Germany, Austria or Ireland - more and more applications are appearing for Cyprus and Malta, where tuition fees are affordable (between 600 and 10,000 euros per year), and English, the official language, is a major advantage for international students.
• Major changes in fields of study
Statistics show sharp decreases in two of the most popular fields: Medicine - minus 75%; Psychology - minus 47%. In parallel, strong increases are noted in other areas:
Architecture and Civil Engineering - plus 50%; Political Science and International Relations - plus 20%, a possible effect of the current geopolitical context.
Top fields of study 2025: Computer Science; Economics - Business & Management; Art and Design; Engineering; Psychology; Social Sciences; Medicine; Law; Biology / Natural Sciences; Media and Mass Communication. "English is no longer considered a foreign language. More and more universities require the deepening of a second language, and young people choose French, German, Spanish or Italian”, adds Alexandra Bădescu.
• World Education Fair, the autumn educational fair
On September 27, in Bucharest, over 63 international institutions from 15 countries will present their offers at the World Education Fair (WEF). Young people will be able to access information about programs, scholarships and tuition fee reductions of up to 50%.
• Educational camps: 10% increase and diversification of offers
The demand for educational camps increased by 10% compared to last year, with the diversification of destinations: Dubai, South Korea, Vietnam, China and Peru are becoming increasingly popular. "Academic camps are gradually replacing the classic format, integrating disciplines such as exact sciences, technology or the arts. In addition, sports are gaining an important role, through camps organized with renowned clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain or AC Milan," explains Raluca Niculae, Camps and High School Department Manager. Internship camps are also emerging, focused on practical experience in top companies, which offer certificates and academic credits useful for admission to elite universities.
The diversification of educational options shows a growing flexibility of young Romanians, who are looking for programs adapted to their needs, whether we are talking about university studies, scholarships or educational camps with an academic and vocational component.
