Romanian students won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2026, Romania thus occupying second place in the world historical ranking by total number of medals, according to the Ministry of Education and Research. The gold medal was won by Rareş-Andrei Neculau, a 12th grade student at the "Vasile Alecsandri” National College in Galaţi. The silver medal went to Mihai-Valeriu Voicu, a 12th grade student at the International Theoretical High School of Informatics in Bucharest. Romania also won two bronze medals, through Andrei-Paul Iorgulescu, a student in the 11th grade at the "Tudor Vianu” National College of Informatics in Bucharest, and Alexandru Dima, a student in the 12th grade at the International Theoretical High School of Informatics in Bucharest.
The Ministry of Education states that the scores obtained by Rareş-Andrei Neculau and Mihai-Valeriu Voicu represent the third best historical performance of Romania in the individual ranking of the competition. This year's results consolidate Romania's position in the historical rankings of the International Olympiad in Informatics Statistics. According to the Ministry of Education, Romania ranks second in the world in the all-time ranking after the total number of medals obtained throughout its participation in the competition. In the value ranking of the medals, established according to the weight of the gold, silver and bronze awards, Romania is in seventh place. The ministry also attributes this performance to the collaboration with the Society for Excellence and Performance in Informatics (SEPI).

The Romanian team was accompanied in Uzbekistan by Professor Adrian Panaete, from the "A.T. Laurian" National College in Botoşani, as Team Leader, and by Luca Perju-Verzotti, SEPI representative and student at École polytechnique, as Deputy Leader. At the level of the Ministry of Education and Research, the coordination of participation in the competition was ensured by the Directorate of Olympiads, Contests, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education. The performance of the Romanian team was also accompanied by a distinction awarded to Professor Adrian Panaete. He was awarded the Long Service Award, a prize offered by the international community for the involvement and coordination of the team during seven editions of the International Olympiad in Informatics. Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, the Romanian ambassador to Tashkent, was also present at the competition held in Uzbekistan, who was with the national team.
• Ministry of Education supports participation in international competitions
The Ministry of Education and Research states that it supports the participation of national teams in international olympiads by covering participation fees, travel costs and daily allowances for the period of stay. The institution also supports the organization and conduct of the stages that precede international competitions, from local, county or municipal phases to the national stage.
