School year 2026-2027: classes start on September 7 and end on June 18

Versiunea în limba română

The final form of the structure of the school year 2026-2027 has been approved by the Social Dialogue Commission, the Ministry of Education and Research announced. According to the official calendar, classes will start on September 7, 2026, and will end on June 18, 2027, with the school year to include 36 weeks of teaching activity.

For certain grades, the duration will be different: students in grades 12-day and 13-evening and part-time will finish classes on June 4, 2027, after 34 weeks; students in grade 8 will finish the school year on June 11, 2027, after 35 weeks.

"School Differently” and "Green Week” Remain on the Calendar

The national programs "School Differently” and "Green Week” will be organized between September 7, 2026 and April 23, 2027. The Ministry explained that these programs do not reduce effective teaching time, as they are included in the total number of weeks of classes and are intended to support non-formal educational activities. The authorities rejected proposals to eliminate or merge these programs, arguing that they contribute to the development of socio-emotional skills and to connecting learning with real life.

Locally determined "mobile" winter vacation

The vacation week established at the school inspectorate level will be scheduled between February 15 and March 7, 2027. The final decision will be made after consultations with students, parents and teachers, and each educational unit will have to communicate the detailed structure by April 1, 2026. The ministry also rejected the proposal that the school year would begin on September 15 and end on June 15. Authorities explained that such a change would have led to: extending classes until June 25; postponing national exams; delaying admission to high school and college. Officials stressed that maintaining the current calendar is "in the best interest of the child", so as not to disrupt subsequent educational stages.

Call to schools to use educational programs

The Ministry called on educational institutions to capitalize on the "School Differently" and "Green Week" programs through accessible and relevant activities for students. According to the institution, these initiatives can contribute to non-formal learning, the personal development of children and the strengthening of the partnership between school, parents and community.
